3 Simple Tips for Getting the Most Out Of Your Candles

Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to burn a candle. Simply striking a match and lighting the wick isn’t enough to ensure you’re benefiting from all the candle has to offer, not to mention experiencing the safest outcome possible.

Prolong the lives of your candles and enjoy every occasion in the best light by following these three easy tips.

Trim the Wick

Most candles come with a warning to trim the wick before burning, yet many people don’t realise the importance of actually doing so. A long wick can smoke or flicker, which simply doesn’t look very nice. If a wick is too long, it cannot draw the wax up its full length, meaning the wick itself is what you are burning. Avoid additional sooting by trimming your Alusi® wicks to a maximum length of 6mm before burning.

“Snuff” or “Blow”?

It’s a pretty instinctual reaction to see a flame and blow it out. However, if that flame has been used to heat a wax pool, blowing on it can also result in the hot wax being taken for a ride, ending up on your table, clothes or floor. Using a proper candle snuffer is the safest and easiest way to extinguish candles, by simply cutting off the flames’ oxygen supply.

Holders and Hurricane Glass

When wax melts it does not immediately evaporate, and that hot liquid needs to drip somewhere. With every Alusi® candle we’ve provided a flame-resistant coaster to help protect your surfaces from the dripping wax, but we also welcome the use of more creative candle mats and holders!

The most important thing to keep in mind is to place your candle on or in a non-flammable material that properly covers the surface below. A decorative plate is a great choice for this, but what if you want to burn your candles in a drafty location? Hurricane glasses, or even simple flower vases, are great alternatives to the usual candle bases. By protecting the flame from the wind, these vessels offer a contained environment for your candle while also giving the reflection of the flame a glass wall to dance with.
