Livia - Nature's Candle

Our line of Alusi® candles is inspired by the essential forms of nature and design. Both purposeful and delicate, these elements may seem rather intuitive but they have resulted in some uniquely intricate patterns.

Livia is known as “The Leaf” because she calls to mind the very essence of nature. With a unique filigree pattern resembling the veins of a leaf, this candle represents growth and potential, just as the tiniest floral bud does. As the candle burns, the wax takes new shape, unfurling just like a flower in bloom.

Interestingly enough, it is this basic, foundational shape of the natural world that was one of the most difficult to develop into a candle. With no horizontal lines, Livia Grande and Petit were created so that when burned in unison the dance of light and melting wax would resemble a time lapse of a growing blossom.

Representing something so organic allows Livia to find a home in all our souls, as both her sculpture and her burning performance connect us to the natural world.

Alusi® Candles are the result of our proud collaboration with a talented team of artists, designers and innovators, but there is one very special woman from whom we get our name. Before we get too deep into the story of the candles themselves, it’s important to first get to know the woman behind the idea. Introducing: Maha Alusi.

Maha, In Her Own Words

I come from Baghdad. My family, the Alusis, are known for their history in spiritual healing. They are proud “Philosophers of Time” and are Sufis in their attitude to life. I enjoyed growing up in this environment of story tellers. I moved to Europe to study architecture, a creative education I chose to help me formulate the many fantasies that filled my youthful mind.

Time is my passion; it is my obsession. My motto is: “We cannot stop time but we can enjoy its passing moments.” This passing of time is what I wanted to communicate through the medium of a candle. I have spent many thoughts and efforts to turning this medium into the language I use to tell stories of time.

This story and motto I try to emulate through my artwork. My candles tell their story as the flame splits and the candles change their shape. Each candle portrays a message from my life experience.

Humans are my inspiration. My second motto is: “Sharing happy moments.” I believe that sharing with others generates love and, where there is love and respect, people are happy. I call it the human universe; other people are a big part of my creative power.

Alusi® candles carry within them a message of sharing; this is why people relate to them. They are individual and unique yet tell the story of all our lives. It is a story we all feel and share. It is this aspect of interconnection that appeals to people.

When I started writing stories with the elements of wax and wick, no one believed it was possible, as the technology did not yet exist. My big desire helped me to develop the technology to realise these types of candles. Today we have international patents for this method of production and wick construction. The production team has grown from three people in my home in Berlin to a large team in Canada with a semi-automated machine. I am very grateful to all my team who came together to produce these beautiful candles. I am really proud of them and what we, as a team, have accomplished. My team and I are continuously working on research and development to inspire new designs.

My third motto is: “The best way to predict the future is to write it!” I see a beautiful future for living the moments of my life happily with the growing human universe by creating more Alusi® candles. Our team creating those candles, developing them, producing them and getting them on the market is international and involves many humans. Our efforts are helping us reach many other humans and always sharing through our art the message of happy moments.

Each candle has become a symbol of loving life and human respect.
